The Friendly Pigeon is a super familiar, chubby-looking dove that's just everywhere on this whole continent. You can spot these birds absolutely anywhere, they're so easy to see in towns and cities, and boy, do they gather in big groups! Guess what? They're super friendly too, they'll happily take food right from your hand. But, I gotta tell you, they have a bit of a messy reputation, which sometimes leads to people suggesting we get rid of them all!
These Friendly Pigeons sneaked their way into the British Rock Dove population, and let me tell you, it had a big impact on those pure, natural Rock Doves. The Friendly Pigeons mate all year round, and they're a bit more assertive than the calm Rock Doves, so they keep expanding their territory up north.
You won't believe the incredible range of plumages these Friendly Pigeons come in! They've got all sorts of colors like white, black, brown, and grey, with different mixtures and patterns. Trust me, you won't mistake them for any other bird!
This lovely pigeon belongs to the Feral Pigeon family and comes in different varieties. This particular one has a charming dark grey plumage on its head, underparts, and most of its body. Its uppertail has a gentle greyish hue, while the rump is a delightful white. The wings are adorned with beautiful dark and light grey bars. Its eye has a striking brownish-orange color, complemented by a graceful white orbital ring. Lastly, the legs and feet of this pigeon are a delightful shade of pink.
This little bird is quite similar to the real Rock Dove! Its lovely blue-grey head smoothly transitions into a shiny metallic green on its neck. And guess what? The upper breast has a gorgeous purple shine, which really stands out against the surrounding greens and greys.
A common sight in cities is the graceful movement of a group of Feral Pigeons soaring effortlessly above buildings. The Feral Pigeon possesses a smooth and relaxed flight pattern, gracefully alternating between gentle flapping and gliding motions.
The incredible diversity of Feral Pigeons is showcased beautifully in this picture. Just take a look! The pigeon on the right displays those familiar wing patterns, known as 'chequering', that we often see in many Feral Pigeons. Meanwhile, the two lovely pigeons on the left represent the lighter side of the spectrum. One is a delightful pinkish-buff shade, while the other is even lighter, almost an exquisite pure white. It's truly amazing to witness the range of colors these pigeons can have!
